Is Content Marketing Worth It for Small Businesses, Solo Entrepreneurs, and Service Providers?
When I talk to small business owners and entrepreneurs about content marketing, one of the first things I often hear is “isn’t that just for big companies?”
If you want the TL/DR version of this post, here it is: nope, this is not even remotely true, content marketing can work equally well for small, micro, and one-person businesses.
In fact, as we’ll discuss a little later, content marketing is both one of the most cost-effective forms of marketing for small businesses, and just one of the most effective, full stop.
There are two main things I see happen when small businesses and entrepreneurs believe content marketing cannot work for them.
Many simply never invest in this incredibly effective and potentially profitable strategy because they believe it’s not for them. This represents a huge lost opportunity.
Others attempt it, but give up too quickly. Content marketing is not an overnight fix, and it takes time to get real results. If you give up when you don’t see instant success, content marketing will not work for you.
I understand the pressure you might be feeling, as a small or solo business owner, to get sales NOW. If you’ll stick with me, though, I hope you’ll see why a long marketing game can ultimately pay off many times over.
I’ve made it my mission to make blog-based content marketing accessible and manageable for small business owners and entrepreneurs of all kinds. That’s why, in this post, I want to bust this myth of “it’s only for large companies” once and for all.
Ready to learn how content marketing can work for you, helping you to make sales and sign your dream clients, no matter the size of your business? Read on.
How This Myth Took Hold
If you’ve been harbouring this belief, you’re far from alone, And, look–I get it! I spent years relying almost exclusively on referrals, not really believing I could run an effective marketing campaign as a solo service-based business owner with a tiny budget.
It’s easy to see huge companies with their big, flashy campaigns and think, “I can’t compete with that.”
And, no. In terms of budget and reach and sheer extravagance, you almost certainly can’t. None of us can. The good news is that we don’t need to!
Unfortunately, I also think this myth is often perpetuated by the industry itself. Read many of the industry standard books on the subject, and you’ll likely hear that you need a full-time writer AND a full-time videographer AND probably a full-time content manager, too.
To be clear: for a large business with a huge marketing budget and an annual turnover in the millions, this is probably good advice!
For me, though? A happy solo business owner with no desire to hire a team or run an agency, serving my clients from a home office the size of a closet?
Yeah, no.
It’s easy to see why so many small business owners, service providers, and other solo entrepreneurs end up believing content marketing isn’t for them or can’t work without a dedicated team and an enormous budget.
There’s just one problem with this myth, which you might have picked up on by now: it’s complete nonsense.
And releasing it will open up a whole new world of marketing opportunities to help you sell, attract the right clients, build customer relationships, and keep the leads flowing in for years.
4 Reasons Why Content Marketing is a Great Strategy for Small Businesses
Let’s look at why I believe, and the data supports, that content marketing is amazing for small businesses, solo entrepreneurs, and service providers.
It’s Cost-Effective and Offers a High Return
Content marketing is, in general, a far more cost-effective approach to marketing than many other strategies.
Data consistently demonstrates that over time, the cost per lead for a successful content marketing campaign tends to be significantly lower than that of paid social media, Google Ads, and print media, amongst others.
The statistic that “content marketing costs 62% less than traditional outbound methods” is often cited, though this comes from fairly old research with some questionable methodology, so I’d take the exact figure with a grain of salt.
The exact figures are less important than the overall pattern, which is that content marketing is an effective and comparatively affordable way to get results.
(By the way: hiring me to create a cornerstone content package for your small business is so much more cost-effective than either a large agency or an in-house marketing team!)
Content marketing also consistently offers a higher return on investment (ROI) over time compared to other marketing methods.
According to the HubSpot State of Marketing Report 2026, small businesses are more likely than average to see a return on their investment from blog posts, and blog posts were among the top 5 highest-ROI content formats overall.
It Builds Trust
Content marketing is also a great strategy for small businesses because it builds credibility and enhances trust. When you do not have a household brand name to fall back on, credibility and trust are everything.
If someone believes you know your stuff, they see you as credible. When you consistently demonstrate credibility, trust grows. And when you show yourself to be trustworthy, people buy from you.
I help my clients to demonstrate their expertise, build their credibility, and earn the trust of their audiences with longform cornerstone blog content that acts as the foundation for all ongoing content marketing efforts.
Its Impact Compounds Over Time
When you focus on creating evergreen content, a single post or article can draw in leads and generate revenue for years, theoretically indefinitely.
Unlike paid ads, which vanish or lose their reach the moment you stop paying, content you’ve created can stay on your website forever and be repurposed again and again for social media posts, email marketing campaigns, and more.
This means that high quality evergreen content, rather than depreciating, actually grows in value over time.
When you work with me on a cornerstone content package, we’ll create evergreen posts that can bring in leads, sales, and money for you for years to come.
It Can Save You Time
When I say “content marketing,” many business owners assume they need to be on all the platforms all the time and wonder how they can possibly fit it all in.
The opposite is actually true.
I love content marketing because it’s infinitely flexible. You don’t need to burn yourself out or run on the hamster-wheel of never-ending content creation forever. In fact, I don’t want you to do that! Instead, you need to:
When we work together on a cornerstone content package, the first part is completely done for you in the form of evergreen blog content. You may have some ideas for the second part, or even have some established platforms already. If not, we can work it out together when it’s time to start sharing your content.
Choosing the most effective platforms and basing your content marketing on consistent and evergreen messaging can save you so much time on your marketing.
You’re not a media company or an influencer, and you don’t need to be. You just need to go where your ideal customers actually are and give them the information and insights they need.
For example, earlier this year I decided to go all-in on LinkedIn (alongside my blog and email list, of course.) I’ve also recently launched a Pinterest after getting interested in its potential as a marketing platform. And… that’s it. Those are my platforms. I’ve left Instagram and Facebook because they’re completely wrong for my business, I’ve left X on ethical grounds, and I sincerely wish to never have a TikTok account for literally the rest of my life.
I promise you don’t need to do it all. You just need to do the one or two things that work.
“But What If I Need Results Instantly?”
I like to be very clear that content marketing is not a quick-win strategy. While you can definitely see early wins, it can take 6-12 months for significant returns to kick in.
In the meantime, you have bills and invoices to pay. You need sales and clients NOW!
In this context, I can see why asking you to invest in a long-game strategy might be a tall order.
The beauty of content marketing, though, is it can work alongside other forms of marketing that provide more immediate wins. In the interim, while you’re getting your content strategy set up and starting to roll it out, this can be a sensible approach to take. And, as it starts to get you results, you can gradually taper down or phase out those other, more expensive methods if you like.
“Is This a ‘Set-It-And-Forget-It’ Strategy?”
I firmly believe “set and forget” in the context of marketing is a myth.
While there are certainly automations that can help you, such as setting up email sequences that will then run automatically when triggered, there is no such thing as a truly passive marketing strategy.
So no, content marketing is not a “set and forget” strategy and I’m very clear that, when you invest in a cornerstone marketing content package with me, some ongoing work will be needed to keep maintaining, sharing, and repurposing your content (you can either do this yourself or outsource it, to me or someone else.)
What this strategy does do, though, is massively free up your time and brain-space from constantly creating random content with no idea whether or not it’s going to work… or avoiding content creation entirely because you think it’s only for big businesses with huge budgets.
So What’s the Verdict–Is Content Marketing Worth It for Small Businesses and Solo Entrepreneurs?
I hope it’s clear by now that I think content marketing is not only “worth it,” but critical for small businesses, service providers, and other solo entrepreneurs.
Content marketing is:
Once you realise its potential, you can stop fighting in vain with social media algorithms or reluctantly squeezing in your marketing around everything else.
Instead, when you start making content marketing work for you rather than assuming it’s not for you, you’ll end up with clear messaging, evergreen material you can use repeatedly, and an engaged audience that actually wants what you offer.
